TAHOE CITY, CA (MPG) - Celebrate Tahoe City's 163rd anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 8, with a day dedicated to the community's rich history, featuring free Historic Walking Tours. 

Presented by the Tahoe City Downtown Association and Mountain Town Walking Tours, the free guided tours depart at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., offering participants an engaging look at the people, landmarks, and events that shaped Tahoe City into the vibrant mountain community it is today.

The walking tours explore downtown Tahoe City while sharing stories of the area's early settlement, historic buildings, and cultural heritage. Whether you're a longtime resident or discovering Tahoe City for the first time, the tours provide a unique opportunity to experience the community through the lens of its history. Tahoe City Day is an opportunity to celebrate the community's heritage while supporting local businesses, restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions. Visitors are encouraged to spend the day exploring downtown and discovering everything Tahoe City has to offer including three museums.

At the Gatekeeper's Museum adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Dam, visitors can experience The Marion Steinbach Native American Basket Collection, one of the largest collections in the United States, while exploring exhibits on Lake Tahoe's maritime history, resort heritage, art and pop culture. Operated by the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, the museum celebrates more than 55 years of preserving and sharing the region's history.

The historic Watson Cabin, built in 1908 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers visitors a glimpse into early life in North Lake Tahoe. As the oldest remaining log structure in the region, the cabin serves as an important reminder of Tahoe City's pioneer heritage located in the heart of downtown.

The SNOW Sports Museum at Boatworks Mall showcases the remarkable history of winter sports in the Sierra Nevada. Exhibits feature local ski pioneers, the development of Tahoe's iconic ski resorts, Olympic athletes, and an extensive collection of memorabilia from the 1960 Winter Olympics, bringing the region's legendary snow sports history to life.

In honor of Tahoe City's 163rd year, the Tahoe City Downtown Association has also launched a new History of Tahoe City webpage featuring stories and historical insights researched and written by local historian and author Mark McLaughlin with historic photographs from the Gatekeeper’s Museum collection. The online resource highlights the people, places and milestones that have shaped Tahoe City through the years.
